The rain was no deterrent on Sunday October 20, 2019, as volunteers from the Vancouver Sunrise Rotary Club served up pancakes for the 400 runners and their supporters at the annual Strachan Hartley Legacy Foundations' Run https://www.shlf.ca/the-run/

The event raises funds for the amazing Streetfront Alternative education program - https://streetfront.ca

Streetfront is an alternative program at Britannia Secondary School that provides at-risk grade 8 to 10 students a unique combination of 60% core academics and 40% sports and outdoor education. The East Vancouver alternative program is economically, ethnically and socially diverse and serves kids who have struggled to cope in mainstream classes.

At the centre of the Streetfront learning program are the values and practices of long-distance running:  Dedication, Commitment and Perseverance.

Streetfront students and graduates are remarkable young people with great stories of personal triumph. By seeing the inherent value of each individual student and investing in their emotional, spiritual, mental and physical development, students unlock their own potential.

Streetfront graduates have a 96% high school graduation rate. Most return as mentors to the program when they transition to their senior high school grades -  another key step on their journey go to future study, work and becoming active citizens.  Although the program was not designed specifically for Indigenous youth, there has been a steady increase in Indigenous student enrollment.

Getting our hands in the batter for a good cause is just another way in which our Vancovuer Rotary club members are working to promote our club's Strategic Vision of "Creating better communities through future generations."
