This week we welcomed 10 members and our guest speaker, Paul Evered .

Rotary Moment:

Frances Kolotyluk gave us the Rotary moment today. She told us about the 5 avenues of service in Rotary, particularly about the first avenue of service, club service.

We are a volunteer organization which requires everyone's help to make the club operate. Everyone gets a chance to pitch in at various times throughout the year. Club Service includes tasks like collecting money at the door, giving the invocation, leading the opening song, greeting arriving members and the like.

Announcements:

* Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is scheduled for April 7th. Please email Natalia to let her know whether you can host or will plan to be a guest.

* 2018 Hoppathon, April 28th. Chris Gailus and Yvonne Schalle will be shooting hoops again this year. Global TV has offered $35K worth of media coverage for the event!

Meeting Program: Today our guest speaker was Paul Evered from the Gastrointestinal Society. He gave us a very interesting and at times funny presentation. In 1976, the Canadian Society of Intestinal Research (CSIR) arose as the first registered charity in Canada to enhance public awareness by providing patient and professional information and funding medical research on a wide array of gastrointestinal diseases and disorders.

Some of the highlights of his presentation were:

  • 60% of Canadians will have some sort of GI disease during their lifetime
  • There are as many as 6 million Canadians with irritable bowel syndrome.
  • More than 9 million with functional dyspepsia, there could be as many as 8 million with chronic acid reflux.
The GI Society and its partner charity the Canadian Society of Intestinal Research collaborate to provide a number of core programs and services that focus on providing Canadians with trusted medically sound information on digestive health.
